In my most recent watercolor series, “Scenes from the Front Range,” I begin to unlock the unique qualities of water on paper. With a nod to the medium’s characteristic flow, my work brings to mind and heart the soothing murmurs of land and lake, mountain and sky, calm and storm, inviting a deeper connection to the natural world. Whatever the medium—watercolor, oil, pencil—I am always inspired by a sense of the extraordinary all around us—everyday experiences easily overlooked but when quietly observed become profound.
My intention in this series is to provide a counterbalance to the necessary yet exhausting work of creative activism, in which art becomes the clarion call to speak out against injustice, cruelty, and bigotry. With my work, I hope to create a refuge—a place of solitude where contemplation invites us to exhale, imagine again a better world, and restore our belief in a brighter future.
