loving tributes to people, places, and times gone by . . .
Darlene developed her interest in watercolor painting over a span of many years, while raising a busy family of four sons, and working in Great Falls, Montana. In retirement, she resumed her painting and soon developed her own style and technique.
She was an active member of Studio 706 and Art Association of Montana. In Great Falls, she has exhibited her work at various venues including auctions at Paris Gibson Square and shows associated with the C.M. Russell Art Auction. Her paintings have won numerous awards at the Montana State Fair including Juror’s Choice and Judges’ Choice. Stephenson chooses imagery that holds beauty, meaning, and sometimes nostalgia. One of her paintings was on tour with the “Montana Art Mobile.”
In recent years, Darlene’s signature painting style has evolved to incorporate old family photographs and vintage sheet music. These paintings are intricately detailed and evocative, loving tributes to people, places, and times gone by with compositions that blend direct realism of the photos and impressionistic watercolor techniques.
After she moving to Loveland, Colorado, over two years ago she has enthusiastically joined a new art community in this beautiful state. She has displayed her art at the 2nd Friday Art Walk in downtown Loveland. She recently won a 1st Place Award in the H20 Art Show at the Windsor Art & Heritage Center. This fall, her art was accepted and purchased at a juried show in the Lincoln Gallery at their regional art show.
Stephenson has been working on a World War I series, completing twelve paintings so far. These paintings are based on photos, postcards and letters sent home by her father during the war. Her son, Joel Long, a poet from Salt Lake City, has written a book of poems based on the letters including one poem used in her painting, “Broken Windows in Reims.”
